Could you live decently on £14,400 a year?

Head line from the BBC.
A salary of £14,400 is the minimum a single person needs for an acceptable standard of living, according to research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF).
I which case I'm about £5,000 short of an acceptable standard of living!

When I was last at work, I was earning just over £14,400 - and I lived comfortably. OK, so I wasn't paying a mortgage or rent, but I reckon I could have done give or take a few minor sacrifices.

Now I'm surviving on DLA and ESA and whilst things are very far from perfect, I get by. Whoever thinks that this figure represents the poverty line is a prick! :)

I don't think they proposed it as a poverty line, I think they talked about "a decent life". Clearly poverty is indecent, but they were thinking of owning a car, going out in the weekend, having a drink etc. A comfortable living as you say.
